India’s renewables capacity up 13% in October
Solar alone added 20 GW.
India continues to boost its clean energy initiatives as it increases its renewable power capacity by 13.5% to 203.18 gigawatts (GW) in October 2024.
Including nuclear energy, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the total non-fossil fuel capacity rose to 211.36 GW from 186.46 GW last year. From April to October 2024 alone, India added 12.6 GW of renewable energy capacity, of which 1.72 GW was installed last month.
India's renewable energy pipeline expanded significantly, with 143.94 GW under implementation and 89.69 GW tendered as of last month, up from 99.08 GW and 55.13 GW a year ago.
Solar continues to lead the pack, increasing 27.9% to 92.12 GW in October 2024. The combined total solar capacity, including projects under implementation and tendered, currently stands at 250.57 GW from 166.49 GW last year.
Wind, meanwhile, increased by 7.8% to 47.72 GW. Total capacity in the pipeline for wind projects has so far reached 72.35 GW.
As of October, large hydro projects contributed 46.93 GW to India’s renewable portfolio, whilst nuclear power capacity contributed 8.18 GW.
