Singapore to launch largest vehicle-to-grid test

The feasibility study will start in November in the Punggol region.

A consortium led by Strides will develop a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, the largest V2G test to be conducted as it involves 15 commercial vans and 10 V2G-enabled electric vehicle chargers.

The consortium, awarded with a grant by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), will start the test-bed in November 2023 in the Punggol region.

A V2G technology allows the harnessing of electricity in a vehicle’s battery and supply back to the grid.

The EMA and SIT said the bidirectional flow of electricity through the technology will help address supply concerns and improve power system stability.

“With its ability to facilitate the bidirectional transfer of electricity, V2G technology has untapped potential that can support the grid in new ways,” EMA Chief Executive Ngiam Shih Chun.

“If successful, the test-bed will enable Singapore to increase the use of innovative technologies to intelligently manage electricity demand and unlock the potential of large-scale V2G adoption in future,” he added.

As part of this, Strides will also develop a fleet management system that will track the status of electric vehicles and maximise fleet schedules, allowing EVs to provide grid services.
