Australian Capital Territory expands landfill gas capture facility

The project will produce 50,000 megawatts of electricity annually.

The Australia Capital Territory is ramping up its landfill fas capture at the Mugga Lane landfill which will be capable of generating 50,000 megawatt-hours (MW) of power annually, meeting the power demand of up to 10,800 homes.

In a statement, the government said the expansion, in partnership with government-owned clean energy engineering firm LGI Limited, will include the installation of two gas-to-energy generators with a 1 MW gas capacity each, 12 MW battery storage and a 20 MW grid connection with Evoenergy.

This will improve the facility's capability to capture harmful methane emissions building within a three-year programme.

In the past three years, the facility cut around 764,000 tonnes of emissions.

“The addition of this new battery system will provide storage capacity and rapid dispatch of the renewable energy generated by the engines at times when the grid requires it most,” said Minister Transport Canberra and City Services Chris Steel.
