EnBW offers stake to JNbp for 1.5 GW offshore wind project
The decision follows a setback in a government funding bid.
Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) is selling its stake in Mona—an offshore wind project with a potential capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) in the Irish Sea—to its partner, JERA Nex bp (JNbp).
The decision comes after the partner companies opted to discontinue the project, along with its sister project, Morgan, following their unsuccessful bid for government support under the “Contracts for Difference” scheme in the recent allocation round by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
Despite this, offshore wind energy remains essential for EnBW, which aims to expand its current capacity from 7 GW to at least 10 to 11.5 GW by 2030.
The company is currently completing the construction, commissioning, and initial operations of the 960 MW He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, whilst developing its 1,000 MW Dreekant project in the same region.
Both EnBW and JNbp will continue to pursue the Morven project in Scotland.
