Japan’s 14.9 MW Appi Geothermal Power Plant starts operation

The project started construction in August 2019.

The 14.9-megawatt (MW) Appi Geothermal Power Plant began operations, the first geothermal power plant in Iwate prefecture with over 10 MW capacity that came online in 28 years.

The power plant was developed by the Appi Geothermal Energy Corporation, a joint venture company formed by Mitsubishi Material Corporation, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, and Electric Power Development Co.

The electricity generated from the project, which started construction in August 2019, will be supplied under a feed-in-tariff system for renewable energy.

The project is also the second geothermal power plant by the three companies after the Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plan in Akita Prefecture.
