Philippines launch $561,000 solar project for four Lanao del Sur hospitals
The installations are expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
The Philippine government is launching a $561,000 (PHP 33m) solar initiative aimed at powering four critical medical facilities in Lanao del Sur.
According to the country’s Department of Energy (DOE), the rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with battery storage will ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential and life-saving medical services, particularly during power interruptions and emergencies.
The installations will be implemented under the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: Access to Climate Security and Health Services (RE3ACHS) Project, led by the DOE through its Mindanao Field Office, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao – Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy, and the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, with support from the Government of Japan.
Under RE3ACHS, a cumulative total of 170 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of rooftop solar PV capacity with battery storage will be installed. Tamparan Provincial Hospital will have 40 kWp rooftop solar PV capacity with 140 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery storage; the Provincial Infirmary in Marawi City will have 30 kWp solar PV and 60 kWh battery storage; Wao District Hospital will have 50 kWp solar PV with 100 kWh battery storage; and Dr. Serapio B. Montañer Jr. Al-Haj Memorial Hospital will have 50 kWp solar PV and 100 kWh battery storage.
The systems are targeted to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2026. These are expected to avoid an estimated 8.67 ktCO₂e in greenhouse gas emissions over a 20-year lifetime.
The RE3ACHS Project forms part of the Japan Supplementary Budget (JSB) 2024 Climate Promise Global Initiative, supported by a $1.3m grant from the Government of Japan for the broader initiative.
