South Korea launches its largest operational offshore wind farm in Jeju
Local villages invested $20.4m, securing a 4.7% stake in the project.
South Korea has completed the 100 megawatt Hanlim Offshore Wind Power Complex in Jeju.
According to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE), the offshore wind complex is located in the offshore waters of Suwon-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju. It is currently the largest offshore wind power complex in commercial operation in the country.
The project was invested in by public power generation companies such as Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Midland Power, and KEPCO Engineering & Construction, which led the entire process from development to operation.
“By configuring key facilities, including turbines, substructures, and cables, with domestically produced equipment, the project is being recognised as an exemplary case that both fosters the domestic industrial ecosystem in the offshore wind sector and strengthens its public interest,” MCEE said.
Three villages near the power complex also formed a cooperative and invested a total of $20.4m (KRW30b), which is 4.7% of the total project cost.
“In line with the offshore wind infrastructure expansion and deployment plan jointly announced by relevant ministries on December 10, we will expand support infrastructure such as ports, vessels, and financing to gradually reduce generation costs while accelerating deployment, and foster the offshore wind power industry as a future growth engine,” Second Vice Minister Lee Hohyeon said.
