Tenaga ready to construct nuclear power plant

TNB has declared its readiness to construct Malaysia’s first nuclear power plant to diversify the country’s energy sources.

According to The Edge Financial Daily, Tenaga Nasional Berhad president and CEO Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh stated that Malaysia’s power generation operations would not be able to meet electricity demand post-2020 if the power producers continued relying on finite hydrocarbon energy resources such as gas and coal.

"I think the government is aiming to have a nuclear plant ready by 2021. That is a very aggressive target. I hope Malaysians can support that because at the end of the day, to build the first nuclear power plant takes a long time," said Che Kahilbhe, according to Bernama.

He revealed that Tenaga has made initial preparations by sending its officials to, among others, the US, UK, Japan and South Korea to learn about nuclear technology.

Tenaga, together with the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry and Malaysian Nuclear Agency, had submitted a preliminary proposal for a nuclear facility to the government, which is still deliberating the feasibility of the project.
