HBAP wins Independent Power Producer of the Year - Indonesia
The company has strengthened grid reliability through zero forced outages and exemplary environmental performance since commencing commercial operations.
PT Huadian Bukit Asam Power (HBAP) has once again achieved a remarkable milestone on the international stage. At the Asian Power Awards 2025, HBAP proudly received the Independent Power Producer of the Year - Indonesia award.
This prestigious recognition stands as tangible evidence to HBAP’s success in developing and operating the Sumsel-8 Mine-Mouth Coal-Fired Power Plant, also known as PLTU Tanjung Lalang, located in Tanjung Lalang, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra.
With an installed capacity of 2×660 MW, PLTU Tanjung Lalang currently stands as the largest coal-fired power plant in Sumatra and the largest mine-mouth power plant in Indonesia. Since achieving its Commercial Operation Date (COD) on 7 October 2023, the plant has demonstrated exceptional operational excellence through its achievement of zero forced outages, setting a new benchmark for power plant reliability across the Sumatra grid.
Such reliability is attributed to the implementation of high-performance equipment engineering design, standardised construction practices, and a fully integrated Distributed Control System (DCS) that enables precision monitoring and real-time diagnostic analysis of equipment conditions.
The superior performance of PLTU Tanjung Lalang was further evidenced during a power system disturbance in Sumatra on 4 June 2024, when the plant successfully maintained a steady supply of approximately 300–350 MW per unit, helping stabilise the electricity network across southern Sumatra.
Beyond operational excellence, HBAP upholds a strong commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The plant is equipped with supercritical boiler technology, which effectively reduces coal consumption per unit of electricity generated and lowers CO₂ emission intensity compared to conventional coal-fired power plants.
Additionally, the deployment of environmentally responsible technologies—including low-NOx burners, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), and flue gas desulfurisation (FGD)—has enabled the plant to reduce NOx emissions by 6.76%, equivalent to approximately 1,120 tons per year. All emissions are continuously tracked and controlled through the Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) to ensure compliance and transparency.
The recognition from the Asian Power Awards, widely regarded as the “Oscars” of Asia’s power industry, reaffirms HBAP’s dedication to innovation, reliability, and sustainability—underscoring its vital role in enhancing national energy security whilst upholding environmental sustainability across Indonesia’s power sector.
