N.U.R Power Sdn Bhd brings home two wins at Asian Power Awards 2024
The accolades recognise N.U.R. Power’s innovative energy solutions for Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) in Kedah, located in northwest Peninsular Malaysia.
N.U.R Power Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s leading Independent Power Utility (IPU), has secured two major wins at the prestigious Asian Power Awards 2024. The company earned Gas Engine Combined Cycle Power Project of the Year - Gold and Gas Power Project of the Year - Malaysia.
With exclusive rights to generate, distribute, and retail electricity in KHTP, N.U.R Power provides reliable power to Malaysia’s premier high-tech industrial park, which hosts global technology giants and supports 34,000 jobs and has attracted a total investment of RM176.7b (US$42.08b).
Meeting rising energy demands
Specialising in addressing the high energy needs of advanced technology companies, N.U.R Power ensures uninterrupted, high-quality electricity services. In 2023, N.U.R Power achieved an impressive System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) of only 3.41 minutes per consumer per year, which underscored its exceptional grid stability and compliance with the MS 61000-4-34 standard for voltage dip immunity, ensuring smooth operation of sensitive factory equipment.
As KHTP’s power demand surged from 176 MW in 2012 to 280 MW in 2023, N.U.R Power launched a major expansion project to meet these growing needs. This initiative includes the construction of a new 130 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant featuring Malaysia’s first Siemens Energy’s SGT-800 gas turbine in a 2 x 2 x 1 combined cycle configuration. This expansion bolsters N.U.R Power's commitment to enhancing reliability and power quality for KHTP’s high-tech industries.
The project began with a 90 MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) block, which started operations in August 2024, and will be upgraded to a combined cycle unit, bringing the total capacity to 130 MW by August 2025.
Focus on environmental sustainability
Environmental sustainability is at the core of N.U.R Power’s expansion. The plant utilises advanced combustor and Dry Low Emission (DLE) burner technologies, achieving world-class emissions performance with CO2 emissions reduced to single-digit levels and NOx emissions as low as 9 ppm. Additionally, the technology is hydrogen-ready and capable of using up to 75% hydrogen fuel, aligning with future sustainability goals.
The SGT-800 turbine's robust single-shaft design ensures exceptional operational reliability, boasting a 99.8% average fleet reliability. Designed for quick starts and fast load adjustments, it can achieve up to 60% net plant efficiency in combined cycle mode, meeting the stringent demands of high-tech industries.
N.U.R Power’s expansion project represents a model of efficiency and innovation. This initiative not only enhances the competitiveness of gas-fuelled CCGT plants in the energy market but also sets a new benchmark for environmentally sustainable power generation, paving the way for cleaner, more efficient energy solutions in the future.
The Asian Power Awards celebrates trailblazing projects and initiatives by power companies addressing the climate crisis whilst meeting the growing global energy demands. N.U.R Power’s achievements underscores its pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s energy landscape.
