San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. sweeps multiple awards for sustainability and efficiency
The company and its subsidiaries earned five honours for employee engagement, efficiency, environmental leadership, and water resource management.
San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. was recognised at the Asian Power Awards 2025 with multiple distinctions that highlight its commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and community impact.
The company received the Employee Engagement Initiative of the Year - GOLD award, whilst its subsidiaries Masinloc Power Co. Ltd. and Malita Power Inc. also earned honours across several categories in the Asian Power Awards 2025, as well as the Asian Water Awards 2025.
Employee engagement for sustainability
San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. won Employee Engagement Initiative of the Year - GOLD in the Asian Power Awards 2025 for its first Sustainability Month Celebration. Themed “Sustainability Matters: Greener Pathways,” the September 2024 event engaged around 2,500 employees across nationwide sites through activities such as a sustainability Bingo challenge, an interactive carbon footprint calculator, and a pledge wall.
These initiatives encouraged employees to adopt the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in their daily lives, reinforcing the company’s net zero ambition.
Fuel flexibility and mill enhancements
Masinloc Power Co. Ltd. was recognised with Operational Efficiency Initiative of the Year - GOLD and Circular Economy Leadership of the Year - Philippines for its cost-effective mill enhancement project.
The upgrade of mill classifiers not only improved energy efficiency but also produced higher-quality fly ash with reduced loss-on-ignition levels. This made the by-product more viable for reuse in the cement industry, supporting the circular economy and reducing landfill waste.
By upgrading coal mills with Mitsubishi Rotary Separator Dynamic Classifiers, the plant achieved a net heat rate savings of about 86 kcal/kWh, equivalent to 36,000 metric tons of coal savings annually. The project also improved ash quality, reduced emissions, and increased throughput, ensuring cost-effective, reliable electricity for consumers.
Sustainable corrosion mitigation
Masinloc Power Co. Ltd. also earned Environmental Upgrade of the Year - Philippines for implementing oxygenated treatment at its 335 MW supercritical unit.
This low-cost transition from traditional chemical treatments cut the use of demineralised water, industrial chemicals like hydrochloric acid, and caustic soda by more than half, whilst improving thermal efficiency and reducing hazardous waste. The initiative preserved aquatic ecosystems, reduced nitrogen discharge, and enhanced equipment reliability, reflecting both operational and environmental gains.
Water conservation through resource reuse
Malita Power Inc., another subsidiary of San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp., won Outstanding Water Resources Contribution of the Year - Philippines for its integration of treated leachate into non-potable domestic water systems. Between July 2024 and June 2025, the project conserved around 8,175.5 cubic metres of water by reusing treated ash pond runoff for sanitation, equipment washing, and utility needs. This reduced reliance on local water supplies and helped ease pressure on community resources.
San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. and its subsidiaries’ success at the Asian Power Awards 2025 underscores their wide-ranging initiatives that combine employee engagement, environmental stewardship, and operational resilience.
