Saudi Electricity Company clinches a win at Asian Power Awards 2025 for cryogenic carbon capture technology

The project underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and leadership in clean energy innovation across the region.

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) emerged victorious at the Asian Power Awards 2025 with the R&D Project of the Year - Saudi Arabia accolade for its active support in pioneering efforts to advance Cryogenic Carbon Capture (CCC) technology as part of a broader strategy to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions.

The CCC technology project, which is part of a strategic collaboration with King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST), aims to engineer and construct a compact, trailer-mounted cryogenic carbon & sulfur capture system to achieve a nominal carbon dioxide capture rate of 0.25 tons per day.

Its rig is a catch-and-release setup, functioning as an IP Demonstration Platform and test facility to try novel technologies of carbon capture. It uses flue gases from the point source of emission and cools the process down to obtain liquefied CO₂ and additional components such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The clean air is exhausted, whilst the slurry of liquid coolant and solid CO₂ is pressurised and distilled. The liquid coolant is returned to the cooling loop, where the CO₂ can be released or stored in a vessel for further utilisation.

CCC technology is not only going to demonstrate the feasibility of cryogenic separation for carbon and sulfur pollutants but is also going to serve as a strategic platform for advancing proprietary technologies and intellectual property.

Its final phase is currently underway at KAUST’s labs, focusing on maximising the CO₂ purity along with the separation of SOx and NOx from the flue gases.
