Chinese energy consumption jumped 3.9% in 2012
Coal accounts for 66.4% of the total energy consumed.
Oil and natural gas made up 18.9% and 5.5%, respectively. The balance is mainly provided by hydro power.
On the other hand, nuclear power accounts for a very small proportion of China’s energy mix despite major programs to build atomic power plants.
The National Bureaus of Statistics said Chinese consumption of coal in 2012 rose by 2.5%, oil by 6.0% and natural gas by 10.2% while electricity use climbed 5.5%.
Energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 3.6%, however.
China has promised to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% to 45% per unit of GDP by 2020 compared to 2005 levels, rather than in absolute terms.
