ENN Energy Holdings Limited brings home two wins from Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2024
The accolades were in commendation of the company’s sustainable practices as well as its comprehensive safety operation management structure.
ENN Energy Holdings Limited received the ESG Initiative of the Year - Hong Kong and Health and Safety Initiative of the Year - Hong Kong honours at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2024, which recognised its commitment to integrating sustainability and safety in its operations.
Environmental initiatives
ENN Energy, guided by its mission "Building a Modern Energy System, Co-building a Better Ecology," focusses on sustainable practices that are geared towards achieving "Dual Carbon" goals. The company prioritises digital innovation and safety whilst aligning its efforts with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
One of the challenges the company addresses is climate change, combatting it with the implementation of governance and risk management. This was in adherence to the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures.
ENN Energy enhances operational efficiency by utilising digital intelligence, reducing methane emissions in city-gas operations and incorporating renewable energy into its services. The company’s greenhouse gas emissions intensity decreased by 28.5% for city-gas operations and by 36.5% for integrated energy businesses in 2023.
Furthermore, renewable energy now constitutes 21% of the energy supply in its integrated energy services. ENN Energy has also reduced energy use in its office buildings by 11% and generates 4.4% of its electricity needs through on-site solar power.
ENN Energy is committed to its Decarbonisation Action Plan. The plan has set short, medium and long-term emission reduction targets. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 without relying on offsetting measures such as purchasing green certificates. In 2024, the company updated its Decarbonisation Action Plan, disclosed the progress of emission reduction targets, updated the net-zero emission reduction roadmap, and set more ambitious emission reduction goals.
Following a "People-Oriented, Safety First" approach, ENN Energy continuously monitors workplace safety and has set clear safety management goals. In 2023, the work-related accident rate was 0.40 per million working hours, with zero fatalities from work-related accidents. The company also collaborates with customers, contractors and partners to promote safety throughout the value chain, providing assessments of potential impacts and the effectiveness of control measures at each risk point.
In terms of governance, the company has tied the remuneration of directors and senior managers to ESG performance metrics. ENN Energy has also maintained a clean record, with no corruption proceedings initiated or concluded against the company or its employees due to strict compliance with anti-corruption regulations.
In 2023, ENN Energy introduced the ESG Smart Ecological Platform as well to ensure compliance with ESG information disclosure and enhance overall ESG management.
These are just a few of the company’s initiatives that stand proof of its commitment to implementing concrete action plans in supporting both its growth and the broader industry's sustainable development.
Fostering safety
ENN Energy has established a comprehensive safety management structure that spans its entire value chain. Amongst the initiatives included in this approach are the regular investigations into potential hazards and the holding of emergency drills to instil a culture of safety. Currently, the company owns several intelligent systems for monitoring, hazard warning, risk control, and emergency response.
To enhance its safety practices, the company has introduced the Intelligent Safety Management System. This covers core operational scenarios, including pipeline network operations, city-gate stations, project sites and integrated energy solutions, with a total of 108 sub-scenarios for thorough oversight.
In 2023, the company accelerated the use of digital intelligence across 28 specialised projects focussed on digital supervision and pipeline network innovations. ENN Energy also employed IoT devices and leveraged AI technology, which resulted in improved safety management.
The company prioritises the safety and reliability of its gas infrastructure by using advanced monitoring equipment. By the end of 2023, ENN Energy had installed 291 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) scanning laser combustible gas detectors, 49,022 pressure monitoring devices, 25,398 combustible gas detectors for valve wells, and 2,983 intelligent cathodic protection monitors for steel pipelines. These measures have led to a significant reduction in third-party pipeline damage incidents, achieving a leakage rate of just 3.19% per 100 kilometres.
In addition to this, the company implemented emergency drill templates in 2023 and improved operational oversight through its Smart Operation Centre.
The company also implemented thorough hazard analysis and protective measures to promote the health and safety of its employees. By the end of 2023, ENN Energy achieved 100% compliance with regular physical examinations for all its workers and employed 837 full-time safety managers. On top of these, 76 of its member companies obtained ISO 45001 certification, with 14 new certifications issued that year.
ENN Energy also considers contractor safety management essential for maintaining the safety and stability of its value chain. With this principle, the company has implemented standardised management practices, pre-duty certifications, and digital record-keeping.
In addition to its internal safety measures, ENN Energy promotes IoT products and digital safety technologies for residential users. By the end of 2023, the company had installed 13 million IoT metres, 1.57 million NB alarms, 670,000 emergency shut-off valves, 5.99 million regular shut-off valves, and 14.77 million flexible metal tubing. It also replaced 10,786 direct-discharge water heaters and 185,693 stoves that lacked flameout protection.
