Vietnam reaffirms economic importance of nuclear power plants

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang said nuclear power plants are of essential significance for the national development.

He added that Vietnam needs support from Russian experts to complete its nuclear projects and report on its progress to relevant government agencies and the Vietnamese people.

Sang made these remarks during a recent meeting with Sergey Kirienko, General Director of Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom), who visited Vietnam recently.

He welcomed Kirienko’s visit, saying that Russia’s experience and high-tech knowledge would enable them to complete their working visit successfully.

Vietnam is focusing on developing nuclear energy as part of its strategy to advance social and economic development by developing key industries. Vietnam’s huge appetite for power has led it to accelerate the construction of its first nuclear power plant in Binh Thuan province with Russian assistance.

Sang noted the plant will be of essential significance for the national development. Sergey said Russia attached great importance to expanding cooperation between the two nations.

He spoke highly of efforts made by Vietnamese students under training at Russian nuclear research centers, adding that Rosatom will provide favorable conditions for Vietnamese trainees who will operate Vietnam’s nuclear power plants.
