Ho Chi Minh City wind farm to be built

It’s a go for a massive wind power hub that will supply Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam with 200MW of power.

The Can Gio Biosphere Reserve will be the site of the wind power hub and its 125 wind turbines made in the USA. The project will cost an estimated US$500 million and is expected to come online in 2015.

The hub will cover a 10 kilometer long area along the coast of the city. Can Gio, described as the best place in southern Vietnam for a wind farm, has average wind speeds ranging from 6.5 meters to 7 meters per second.

The city currently has only two renewable energy sources: a 2MW plant producing power from waste and a 0.1MW solar power plant on Thanh An island. It intends to build a 12MW plant at a rubbish dump in Binh Chanh District and a 7MW plant at rubbish dump in Hoc Mon District.
