IAEA concludes second water safety review at Fukushima Daiichi plant

The IAEA mission took place on 14-18 November.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded its second mission to review the safety of the treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) reported.

The mission was carried out between 14-18 November, following the first one that took place in February of this year

“Our reports will be made widely available to the public. The IAEA’s scientific assessments should provide confidence to the people of Japan and to all IAEA member countries,” Gustavo Caruso, director, and coordinator for the Fukushima ALPS project, IAEA, said.

Caruso was joined by nine other international experts from Argentina, China, the Republic of Korea, France, the Marshall Islands, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

The review particularly focused on the following technical aspects: crosscutting requirements and recommendations; characterization of discharge and source term; safety-related aspects of systems and processes for controlling discharges; radiological environmental impact assessment; regulatory control and authorization of discharges; source and environmental monitoring programs; involvement of interested parties; and occupational radiation protection.
