HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited clinches award at Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2022

It won the COVID Management Initiative of the Year - India award.

Energy company HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) has taken home the COVID Management Initiative of the Year - India award at the recently held Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2022 for the measures it has taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, India witnessed unprecedented challenges in the wake of the global public health crisis. HMEL took immediate action to contribute towards the prevention and management of the health emergency.

Its CSR team provided employment opportunities to the self-help groups associated with HMEL in its vicinity by preparing masks, which were further distributed amongst local communities, employees, and workers. The company also contributed towards the required support for various social, government, and other institutions by arranging ventilators, PPE kits, and sanitisers amongst others, for front-line workers in the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

A 100-bed makeshift hospital equipped with all necessary medical equipment was also established by the District Administration near the boundary wall of HMEL’s Refinery (the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery) wherein HMEL supplied 1000 NM3/hr of oxygen from the existing oxygen plant in its Refinery, to ensure sufficient oxygen supply to the hospital in view of the oxygen scarcity faced during the second wave of the pandemic. It also provided partial financial support for the equipment in the hospital.

Meanwhile, HMEL also supplied a number of oxygen PSA plants in the Patiala district that were established along with the Patiala district administration to provide uninterrupted oxygen to the patients.

Since HMEL was executing its Guru Gobind Singh Polymer Addition Project (Petrochemical Project) during this time, wherein ~ 20,000 labourers were working daily, the labour colonies were carefully managed by its medical team to keep the workers safe and to prevent the exodus of the labour.

HMEL provided financial assistance to the Bathinda and Patiala district administrations for the establishment of COVID isolation centers as well as lodging and food arrangements for migrant laborers.  Grocery kits were distributed to households in the surrounding villages.

Multiple COVID vaccination camps were also arranged at its occupational health centre as well as HMEL’s Township medical centre for employees, their family members, and contract workers.

With all of the health and safety measures in place, HMEL was able to keep the COVID-19 positivity rate within its premises below 5% and ensure zero COVID-19 fatalities amongst its employees.

“Continuous announcements pertaining to precautions and advocacy of COVID appropriate behaviour were ensured through the distribution of multilingual awareness pamphlets and poster exhibitions," the company said.

HMEL also made a generous financial contribution to the PMCARES Fund (an emergency fund created by the Prime Minister’s Office, Govt. of India to combat the spread of coronavirus in India).

The prestigious awards program recognises the most outstanding companies in Asia Pacific’s oil and gas sector that have risen above various challenges and remained steadfast despite the challenging environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
