Malaysia’s TNB inks deals with Indonesia, Singapore to support ASEAN Power Grid

The partnerships will enhance energy resilience and security in the region.

Malaysia-based utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) signed strategic partnerships with its Indonesian and Singaporean counterparts to collaborate to speed up the establishment of the interconnected ASEAN Power Grid.

In a statement, TNB said the first memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with Indonesia’s PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara and the ASEAN Centre for Energy to conduct a joint feasibility study for a potential cross-border electricity interconnection between Sumatra, Indonesia, and Peninsular Malaysia.

The project, which will create a seamless integration of renewable energy sources, will include technical assessments, policy and regulatory reviews, economic analyses, commercial frameworks, preliminary environmental and social impact assessments, and an implementation plan.

The other MOU was signed with Singapore’s electricity transmission and distribution company SP Power Assets (SPPA). The two parties are actively involved in the technical feasibility of a second power interconnection facility between Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.

Upon completion, the facility will enhance the energy trading between the two regions.
