ADB grants $250m loan to enhance Pakistan’s power transmission

ADB’s Power Transmission Strengthening Project will aid the expansion of Pakistan’s power grid.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has permitted $250m in loans for the expansion and improvement of the power transmission network in Pakistan, particularly in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The loan will fund ADB’s Power Transmission Strengthening Project in Pakistan, which will support the stability of the power grid and increase transmission volume. It targets to reach a high-voltage transmission of 500 kilovolt (kV) and 200 kV, and upgrade transmission lines to reduce power losses.

The project will accompany ADB’s support to the National Transmission & Despatch Company Limited (NTDC), which invests in energy security, climate resilience, financial management, and improved capacity for cleaner sources of energy and transmission in Pakistan.

“Reliable power supply is essential to inclusive, sustainable economic growth, and it will also provide economic opportunities to rural communities,” Yevgeniy Zhukov, director general for ADB Central and West Asia, stated.
