India directs gas-based power plants to maximise generation during summer

The order will run from 1 May to 30 June.

The Indian government ordered gas-based generating stations to maximise their power generation to meet the high electricity demand during the summer season from 1 May to 30 June.

In a statement, the Ministry of Power said a portion of the gas-based power generating stations were unused due to commercial concerns.

GRID-INDIA will inform the gas-based generating stations of the number of days they are required to produce electricity.

Stations with power purchase agreements (PPA) with distribution licensees should first offer the power to the PPA holders, otherwise, it would be offered to the power market.

Other measures taken to meet the electricity demand during summer include the acceleration of new capacity additions, and moving of planned power plants maintenance to monsoon season.

It also includes bringing down partial outages in thermal power plants, shifting hydropower peak hours generation, and full capacity operations for imported-coal-based power plants, amongst others.
