Global offshore wind capacity rose by 9.8 GW in 2023

The total offshore wind capacity reaches 67.4 GW.

The global offshore wind sector saw an additional 9.8 gigawatts (GW) capacity in 2023, spread across 25 new offshore wind farms, according to a report by the World Forum Offshore Wind.

The new additions, which are slightly higher than the 9.4 GW recorded in 2022, bring the total offshore wind capacity globally to 67.4 GW.

Of the new offshore wind farms, 18 are located in Asia, whilst seven are in Europe.

“Yet, 2023 was not an easy year for the industry: increased costs, supply chain struggles, delayed or even cancelled projects – we all remember the headlines,” said WFO Managing Director Gunnar Herzig.

“However, scaling up offshore wind is not optional; it is crucial to decarbonize our economies,” he added.

In terms of global capacity, China dominated as it accounted for 47% of the total

There are 282 offshore wind farms in operation globally, with 158 located in Asia, 122 in Europe, and two in the US.

The report added that the average size of new wind farms is 392 megawatts (MW), higher than the 225 MW average in the previous year.
