Proposed Southern Ocean offshore wind zone bags feasibility permit

It is expected to meet 10% of Victoria’s electricity needs.

Australia has granted a feasibility licence for the proposed Spinifex Offshore in the Southern Ocean region, off Victoria’s Southwest coast.

Following this development, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said the project can now assess the feasibility of its proposed wind farm in the Southern Ocean offshore wind zone.

The project, which received a preliminary offer in September 2024, is projected to generate 1.2 gigawatts of power – enough to meet 10% of Victoria’s electricity demand.

Prior to constriction, the project still needs to complete environmental assessments and other criteria, which may take up to seven years.
