Uzbekistan taps partner for joint study on energy development plan

This will cover the evaluation for the upgrade of existing power plants.

The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) for a joint study of a power development plan.

Under this agreement, the parties will work on evaluating an upgrade for existing power plants, evaluating new gas turbine combined cycle plants, including hydrogen co-firing and scope of necessary modifications, and capacity planning with the latest technologies.

The program will run for two years with financial support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.

Uzbekistan's government recently published its plan for introducing renewable power by 2030. The country aims for more than 54% of renewable energy generation by that date.

The parties will also evaluate the current plan and determine necessary countermeasures, including the implementation of new systems and the modification of the current gas turbine fleet to supplement renewables introduction and promote further decarbonisation.
