This led to nearly $8b in forex savings.
India’s coal imports decreased 7.9 % in fiscal year (FY) 2025, totalling 243.62 million tonnes (MT).
This reduction resulted in foreign exchange savings of approximately $7.93b, the Ministry of Coal said.
Notably, imports for the Non-Regulated Sector dropped 8.95% year-on-year. Although coal-based power generation grew by 3.04% in FY 2025, imports for blending by thermal power plants sharply decreased by 41.4%.
India has been implementing efforts to fuel its coal production and reduce its dependence on imports. These have led to a five percent growth in coal output during FY 2025.
