PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited wins at Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025

The company’s innovations deliver significant emissions reduction and efficiency gains in Thailand’s oil and gas sector.

PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited won Offshore Initiative of the Year - Thailand and Upstream Project of the Year - Thailand in the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025.

The company was recognised for its development of the Extremely Low BTU Flare Tip, a technology breakthrough designed to address the limitations of existing lean gas or low BTU flare tip systems. Conventional gas sweetening processes generate continuous flaring of gas streams with very low heating values, leading to high greenhouse gas emissions. Existing low BTU flare tip technologies required the injection of hydrocarbon gas to sustain combustion at minimum 200 BTU/scf, increasing costs and emissions.

By leveraging combustion principles, the Extremely Low BTU Flare Tip sustains a stable flame with very low heating value gases. After years of research, prototyping, and field testing, the technology was successfully installed on a gas processing platform at Great Bongkot South in the Gulf of Thailand in July 2024. Field results showed a 40% improvement in combustion efficiency compared to existing technologies, an annual reduction of 170,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions, and cost savings estimated at US$10m annually per platform. The installation at Great Bongkot South marked the world’s first offshore deployment of Extremely Low BTU flare tip technology capable of sustaining combustion below 200 BTU/scf.

The company’s efforts highlight the potential for large-scale adoption of this technology across more than 100 existing membrane units and upcoming greenfield projects with high CO2 reservoirs. This could deliver substantial benefits for emissions reduction and operational efficiency in the wider industry.
