EBRD-backed hydropower plant completed in Tajikistan
This benefits 500,000 people in Sughd province.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced the completion of the Qairokkum hydropower plant (QHPP) in Tajikistan.
In a statement, the EBRD said all six hydroelectric units of the plant have been launched. Rehabilitation measures included concrete dam works and the installation of hydraulic steel components, turbines and electromechanical equipment.
Initiated in 2019, the upgrade was supported by a $196m financing package organised by the EBRD. The upgrade introduced innovative climate-resilience measures, enabling the plant to cope with the expected impact of climate change on the country’s hydrological systems.
As a result, the plant’s installed capacity has increased from 126 megawatts (MW) to 174 MW providing electricity to 500,000 people in the Sughd province.
