Seatrium awarded offshore scope for TenneT’s BalWin5 project

The fabrication starts January 2026 for the 2.2-GW HVDC project.

Seatrium has been awarded the offshore scope for TenneT’s BalWin5 grid connection project as part of a consortium with GE Vernova, according to the press release.

The project covers a 2.2-gigawatt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link between the German North Sea and Germany’s onshore grid and is scheduled for commissioning in 2032.

The grid connection will span about 325 kilometres across subsea and onshore cables and is designed with 200 magawatts of technical headroom above the standard 2GW capacity. The system is stated to be capable of supplying electricity to approximately 2.75 million households.

Seatrium will design, construct, transport and install the offshore converter platform, with fabrication to be carried out in Singapore and Batam starting on 1 January 2026. GE Vernova will provide the HVDC technology, including onshore and offshore converter stations and control and protection systems.

The BalWin5 award marks the fourth project secured by the GE Vernova–Seatrium consortium under a five-year framework cooperation agreement with TenneT announced in March 2023, the press release said. It is the first project awarded under TenneT’s German 2GW offshore grid connection programme.
