India coal output hits record 1,047 million MT in 2024-2025

This shows an increase of 4.98% YoY as coal accounts for 72% of country’s total power generation.

India recorded the highest coal production in 2024-2025 with 1047.523 million metric tonnes (MT), an increase of 4.98% year on year (YoY), the country’s Ministry of Coal announced.

India produced 1042.90 million MT of provisional coal during the calendar year (CY) 2025, a 0.23% YoY increase from 1039.62 million provisional MT from the last CY, the ministry added.

During CY2025, the country has supplied about 1016.14 million MT of provisional coal, a 0.25% YoY increase from the 1013.59 MT compared to last year.

The ministry said that allocation orders have been issues for 33 coal mines during the period.

Coal contributes more than 55% to India’s primary commercial energy, it added, and in total power generation, coal-fired power generation accounts for about 72%.

The ministry said that coal will remain a strong pillar of India’s energy security, and it will implement advances in its clean energy transition, as the coal provides reliable baseload power

Coal demand in the country is expected to increase to about 1.5 billion tonnes by 2030.

Meanwhile, coal imports in the country during 2024-25 fell by 7.9%, totaling 243.62 million MT, compared to 264.58 million MT in the same period of previous fiscal year.

This reduction resulted in foreign exchange reduction of approximately ₹60681.67b ($86.409m), the ministry said.

The ministry said that it implemented coal policies for greater flexibility and accessibility, such as the for Auction of Coal Linkages to Non-Regulated Sector and revised scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala (Coal) Transparently in India (SHAKTI) policy.
