Green hydrogen imports from New Zealand to support Japan’s carbon goals
Commercial imports and exports are expected in the early 2030s.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), OBAYASHI CORPORATION, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Chiyoda Corporation have formed the Japan–New Zealand Hydrogen Corridor to study the production of green hydrogen in New Zealand and its export to Japan.
MOL noted that hydrogen will be a key clean energy source, emitting no CO2 when burned. Its potential applications span mobility, industrial sectors such as steel and chemicals, and co-firing in thermal power plants.
It added that Japan’s limited energy self-sufficiency and relatively small share of renewable energy highlight the need for imported green hydrogen to meet future demand.
The company also pointed to New Zealand’s abundant geothermal and hydropower as ideal for green hydrogen production. Imports from New Zealand, backed by strong trade ties, will help Japan reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security.
Studies will begin in fiscal 2026 to establish a supply chain for green hydrogen from New Zealand to Japan, with commercial imports and exports expected in the early 2030s.
The project aims to support Japan’s carbon neutrality goals whilst fostering a new export industry for New Zealand.
