Western Australia secures over 1GW of wind power

First wind farms start by 2028.

The Cook Government has secured a major boost to Western Australia’s renewable energy supply, signing agreements to purchase power from several new wind farms planned for regional areas.

The projects are expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 800,000 homes each year, with total capacity exceeding the state’s remaining coal-fired power stations.

Under a series of long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), state-owned utility Synergy will procure energy from multiple projects upon completion. These include the Parron Maam Marang Wind Farm, a proposed 470-megawatt facility led by Zephyr Energy—a partnership between Parron Developments and Atmos Renewables—targeted to begin supplying electricity by late 2028.

In a separate deal, the Water Corporation will source 330MW from the 550MW Marri Wind Farm, which is due to come online in 2029.

Together, the agreements will deliver more than 1 gigawatt of renewable energy, surpassing the government’s 810MW wind target to replace coal generation.

The move builds on existing investments, including large-scale battery storage, and follows an earlier agreement for the Warradarge Wind Farm Stage 2, expected to power 164,000 homes and businesses by 2027.
