Scatec and Aboitiz Power launch 16 MW Magat BESS 2 to boost Philippine grid stability

The project is co-located with the Magat hydropower plant.

Scatec ASA and Aboitiz Power have started commercial operations of the 16 MW Magat Battery Energy Storage System 2 (BESS 2) in the Philippines, expanding their grid storage assets at the Magat hydro power site.

The new battery is connected to the hydro plant and will earn revenue from the country’s ancillary services market, which supports grid stability. It follows the earlier 24 MW Magat BESS, which has been operating since 2024 and generating ancillary services income.

The companies say one-hour battery systems are well suited for fast-response grid support and are expected to become more important as the Philippines increases renewable energy capacity.

Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said the project strengthens the company’s position in Philippine battery storage, with 40 MWh currently operating and 120 MWh under construction.

“The project builds on the successful operating track record of the existing Magat battery system and demonstrates our ability to develop flexible energy infrastructure supporting grid reliability and renewable energy integration,” he said.

The project is a 50/50 joint venture between Scatec and Aboitiz Power and is financed through debt facilities linked to the Magat hydro plant.
