Global onshore wind market to double, hit $321b by 2035

Turbines above 5 MW will record the fastest segment growth through 2035.

Renewable energy investment, turbine technology improvements, grid infrastructure expansion, and technology adoption are expected to drive global onshore wind market growth, according to MarketsandMarkets.

The market is projected to expand to $321.14b by 2035 from $132.47b in 2026, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.3%.

Governments, utilities, and private companies are investing in wind projects to increase energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and meet sustainability targets, the report said.

Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest market share at 71.0% in 2025, backed by clean energy policies, manufacturing capacity, and large-scale wind deployment.

China led the region, with onshore wind capacity exceeding 590 gigawatts (GW) at the end of 2025.

India is expanding capacity through renewable energy policies, domestic manufacturing, and grid integration investment, adding more than 6 GW annually and remaining on track to surpass 56 GW of cumulative installed capacity by the end of 2026.

Larger, more efficient turbines are also driving growth, with the above-5-MW segment expected to post the fastest growth rate amongst turbine categories at a CAGR of 13.4% from 2026 to 2035.

The 3- to 5-MW segment is expected to capture the largest market share, balancing power output, investment cost, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Wind developers require substations, transformers, and transmission lines to connect new projects to electricity grids, making grid investment a parallel requirement for capacity growth.

Companies are also using artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, digital twin technologies, and drone inspections to reduce unplanned outages and improve wind farm operations.

Repowering projects and battery energy storage systems are also supporting growth, with repowering allowing older wind farms to replace smaller turbines with newer models to increase energy output without extensive site expansion.
