Masdar, BEEAH launch first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant 

The facility will divert 300,000 tonnes of waste from landfills annually.

Masdar and BEEAH, through its joint venture, launched the first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant in the Middle East.

The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant will divert up to 300,000 tonnes of waste from landfills annually. It will also enable Sharjah to increase its current landfill diversion rate to 100% from 76%.

“For the UAE, this project is a scalable clean energy option to drive towards the national sustainability agenda,” BEEAH Group Chairman H.E. Salim bin Mohammed Al owais said. 

“In the emirate of Sharjah, we are realizing the Middle East’s first zero-waste city and exploring more ways to contribute to national targets.”  

The project will also displace nearly 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions to further push the United Arab Emirates (UAE) net-zero targets by 2030. 

According to Masdar, the plant will combust waste and produce 30 megawatts of low-carbon electricity, enough to power 28,000 homes in Sharjah, and save 45 million cubic metres of natural gas per year.
