India’s coal imports down 3.1% in April to October 2024

This was despite growth in coal-based power generation.

Coal imports to India have declined 3.1% to 149.39 million tonnes (MT) from the April to October 2024 period from 154.17 MT the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Coal, this was despite growth of 3.87% in coal-based power generation. Coal imports for blending by thermal power plants fell 19.5%.

Meanwhile, coal output grew 6.04% to 537.57 MT amidst efforts to enhance production and optimise its usage within the country.
