India’s coal production up nearly 4% in April

This reflects efforts to ensure consistent supply and stability.

India has reported a 3.63% increase in coal production from last year, reaching 81.57 million tonnes (MT) as of April 2025.

According to the Ministry of Coal, this shows the government’s efforts “to ensure consistent supply and operational stability in the sector.”

Production from Captive/Other entities mines during April 2025 in FY 2025 to 2026 stood at 14.51 MT from 11.46 MT the previous year. This surge highlights the growing contribution of captive mining to India’s overall coal output.

Meanwhile, coal dispatch reached 86.64 MT from 85.11 MT in the same period.

Coal stock held by coal companies witnessed a notable surge, reaching 125.76 MT from 102.41 MT during the corresponding period of the previous year. At Coal India Limited alone, the total coal stock stood at 105 MT in FY 2025-26, marking a 22.10% increase.
