Indonesia launches 1.3 GW rooftop solar capacity in major energy push

It supports the country’s goal of reaching 100 GW of solar energy.

Indonesia has officially launched 1.3 GW of rooftop solar power capacity, marking a key step in its national energy transition.

The program is a joint effort by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), PLN, and the Indonesian Solar Energy Association (AESI). It highlights the country’s push to expand renewable energy and strengthen energy security.

Officials said the launch supports Indonesia’s goal of scaling up solar energy toward a long-term target of 100 GW nationwide. It also reflects current installed rooftop solar capacity of about 1.3 GW.

The initiative is part of the “Road to IndoSolar 2026” program, which brings together government, industry, investors, academics, and international partners to speed up solar development.

The rooftop solar expansion aligns with several key national priorities, including the implementation of PLN’s 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), which places greater emphasis on increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix.

It also supports the expansion of access to clean energy through village-based and cooperative-based solar and energy storage programs.

Additionally, the initiative aims to strengthen Indonesia’s industrial competitiveness by promoting cleaner and more efficient energy use.

It further supports the development of green industries, including emerging sectors such as green data centers, while also enhancing Indonesia’s position as a regional leader in ASEAN’s energy transition efforts.
