Japan’s installed wind power nears 6GW as of 2024

Over 700 MW was added last year.

The cumulative installed capacity of wind power in Japan has reached 5,840.4 megawatts (MW) as of end-December 2024, according to the Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA).

JWPA’s said in its latest report that the cumulative capacity is equivalent to 2,720 units. New installations in 2024 alone were 703.3 MW or 170 units at 23 wind farms.

In offshore wind power, the Ishikari Bay New Port Offshore Wind Farm has started operation, contributing to the increase in installed capacity. This will further expand Japan’s offshore wind power market, following the Akita Port Offshore Wind Farm and the Nyuzen Offshore Wind Power Farm, which went into operation in 2023.

As of the end of December 2024, Japan has 7 full-scale offshore wind farms. Of these, five are fixed and the rest are floating.

By region, topped the list Hokkaido, increasing its installed capacity by approximately 455 MW compared to the previous year.
