KAERI and EPRI explore enhancement of safety, operation of nuke reactors

Korea presented progress in sodium-cooled fast reactors amongst others.

Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) recently held a meeting to look into possible collaborations to enhance safety and operations of advanced reactors.

During the meeting, KAERI shared developments in sodium-cooled fast reactors, molten salt reactors, and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, and introduced SMART-100, a light-water small modular reactor that obtained Standard Design Approval (SDA) in September 2024.

SMART-100 has completed its licensing process at the design stage. This can already be deployed for diverse applications, including meeting power demands of digital infrastructure such as data centres.

Meanwhile, EPRI shared its ongoing collaboration with major US tech companies seeking reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
