India’s largest solar power plant switched on
Project at Rajasthan has a capacity of 50 megawatts.
It is the first phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. A total of 490 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity was allocated in the first of two phases of the National Solar Mission.
The Rajasthan project, which was undertaken by Welspun Energy at a cost of US$3.5 billion, was commissioned in just five months. The project is expected to feed 83.2 million kWh of electricity into the grid every year, enough to meet the demand of 25 million homes. The project will also remove some 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
Prior to this project, the largest solar PV projects in India had a capacity of 40 MW.
