Japanese power companies sell 7.9% less in June

Japanese electricity demand in June was down 7.9 percent on last year to 64.4 billion kWh. This was measured in terms of the total electricity sales of the 10 power companies in Japan.

Based on statistics of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan, lighting demand went down by 2.1 percent from last year to 18.13 billion kWh. Outside the liberalised segment, lighting demand declined by 2.1 percent due principally to a shorter meter reading period than the last year.

Commercial demand in the liberalised segment, however, went up by 0.7 percent with 16.31 billion kWh.

Large industrial user demand was down year on year for ninth consecutive months, decreasing by 17 percent to 21.57 billion kWh. This was due mainly to year-on-year decline in all major sectors including steel.
