Kakrapar Unit-1 attains criticality

 

The first unit of Kakrapar Atomic Power Station has achieved criticality.



The unit is expected to be synchronized with the western grid next week after completion of certain mandatory regulatory tests and clearance by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board .

The unit has been under renovation and modernization since July 1, 2008 has achieved criticality.

The significant works carried out during the R&M campaign at consist of En-masse Coolant Channel Replacement, En-masse Feeder Replacement and several safety upgrades including in-core repairs, using indigenously developed technology.

The KAPS units have been placed under IAEA safeguards in early this month and are loaded with imported fuel.
