Malaysia’s largest hydroelectric plant starts operation in the next few days
The RM7.5 billion Bakun hydroelectric project with an installed capacity of 2,400 megawatts will be fully operational on October 4, revealed Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) CEO Torstein Dale Sjotreit.
The Malaysian government awarded the project to SEB on May 1, 2000 and was completed last month.
Speaking at the Power Gen Asia forum held in Malaysia last Sept 27-29, Mr. Sjotreit stressed that the project is a major step forward in the development of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) in 2020.
“Once the project becomes fully operational, it will be the main power supplier of Sarawak state, providing energy especially for the development of SCORE. With ample rainfall in the catchment and a huge reservoir, the Bakun Power Plant will have a firm generating capacity of more than 1,771 MW,” he said.
The SCORE project aims general power expansion for Serawak state which requires RM300 billion worth of investments.
Bakun is located on the Balui River in the upper Rejang River basin, 37 km upstream fron Belaga town in the state of Serawak.
