ACWA Power to develop RE projects in Azerbaijan

The agreements include the installation of 1GW onshore and 1.5GW offshore wind.

Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power signed implementation agreements with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and a cooperation deal with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic for the development of renewable energy in the country.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the memorandum of understanding with the energy ministry includes the development of a battery energy storage system. Separate agreements were also signed for the deployment of one gigawatt (GW) of onshore wind, and 1.5GW of offshore wind.

Meanwhile, the agreement with the state’s oil company includes collaboration and exploration of renewables and green hydrogen.

ACWA Power is currently developing a 240-megawatt wind farm project that is expected to produce around one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and save about 220 million cubic metres of natural gas.

The plant will also cut carbon emissions by over 400,000 tonnes per year after completion.
