EGAT, USTDA to study pumped storage development at Vajiralongkorn Dam

The dam is located in Kanchanaburi province.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the US Trade Development Agency entered into an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for a pumped storage hydropower plant at the Vajiralongkorm Dam in the province of Kanchanaburi.

In a statement, EGAT Governor Boonyanit Wongrukmit said the partnership is a vital stem for the development of clean energy infrastructure.

The governor added that pumped storage facilities are large-scale energy storage “which helps maintain stability, reduces fluctuations of power system, and supports development of grid modernisation.”

A pumped storage hydropower plant is composed of an upper reservoir and a lower reservoir wherein the water from the upper reservoir is released to generate electricity during peak demand periods.

Meanwhile, the plant uses excess electricity to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper during periods of low demand to be stored until additional power is needed to be produced.
