Marubeni's offshore wind project gains Japanese government support

It will establish over 15 megawatts of offshore wind off the coast of Akita Prefecture.

Marubeni’s Souther Akita Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Project has gained support from the Japanese government through the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

In a statement, Marbueni said the project composed of two units of over 15 megawatts located on the southern coast of Akita Prefecture, was awarded under NEDO’s Green Innovation Fund Project/Cost Reductions for Offshore Wind Power Generation/Floating Offshore Wind Power Demonstration Project (Phase 2).

The Green Innovation Fund Project was established to support companies that have goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 by providing research, development, and social implementation for up to 10 years.

Cost Reductions for Offshore Wind Power Generation, meanwhile, target a technology that will commercialise offshore wind power generation at a competitive cost.

The project is led by a consortium spearheaded by its subsidiary Marubeni Offshore Wind Development Corporation.

Other members of the consortium include Akita Floating Offshore Wind Corporation, a special purpose company in which Marubeni has invested, Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., Japan Marine United Corporation, TOA CORPORATION, TOKYO SEIKO ROPE MFG. CO., LTD., Kanden Plant Corporation, JFE Engineering Corporation, and NAKANIHON AIR Co., Ltd.
