Masdar inks deal for 1 GW wind farm in Uzbekistan
This will energise 300,000 homes.
Masdar has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Energy Uzbekistan to develop a one gigawatt wind farm in the country’s Mingbulak region.
In a statement, Masdar said the facility will power 300,000 households and create over 1,000 jobs during construction and operation. This is the first phase of a strategy to build three wind farms in Uzbekistan.
Masdar in 2023 signed an agreement with Uzbekistan to develop two gigawatts of wind energy. In addition to the Mingbulak wind farm, this agreement includes two more sites: Akpetki in the Karakalpakstan region and Buzaubay in the Navoiy region.
“Uzbekistan is a key strategic partner for Masdar, and we are working together to achieve the country's ambitious renewable energy goals by delivering renewable energy projects that will power the country's homes and businesses – and sustainable growth – while successfully cutting emissions,” said Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
The Abu Dhabi-based energy firm has committed to support Uzbekistan's goal of generating 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Amongst its projects in the Central Asian country are the 500 megawatt (MW) Zarafshan Wind Farm, and the 100 MW utility-scale Nur Navoi photovoltaic (PV) solar plant.
