Philippines, Portugal to partner on RE development

Areas of development may include alternative fuels such as hydrogen.

Portugues electric utility firm Energias de Portugal (EDP) and EDP Renewables are interested to invest in renewable energy projects in the Philippines, Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinh told Philippine Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla in his courtesy visit.

In a statement, the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) said Cravinh cited renewable energy projects and alternative fuels such as hydrogen as potential areas for cooperation.

Meanwhile, Lotilla expressed interest in cooperation in the areas of offshore wind and floating solar, hydrogen and ammonia production using renewable energy, liquified natural gas importation, and improvement of distribution and transmission lines.

“Portugal, as an early starter in RE, has similar challenges with the Philippines and is interested in DOE’s approach in developing and utilizing the country’s RE sources,” the department said.

EDP generated 74% of its energy from renewable sources and targets to reach 100% clean energy by 2030.

EDP Renewables, which was built to manage and operate EDP’s renewable portfolio, is the fourth-largest wind energy producer and global leader in onshore wind farms.

Portugal de-commissioned its two-remaining coal-fired power plants in 2021.
