Qatar to build 2,000-MW solar energy facility in Dukhan
This will increase the capacity to 4,000 MW by 2030.
QatarEnergy has announced plans to construct the Dukhan Solar Power Plant, a new solar power mega project with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW).
In a statement, QatarEnergy said the new solar power mega project will be built in the Dukhan area, and will be one of the world's largest solar power plants.
“I am pleased to announce that, in line with our Sustainability Strategy, we will more than double our solar power production capacity to about 4,000 megawatts by 2030 through the world-scale, 2,000 megawatt Dukhan Solar Power Plant,” said Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the minister of State for Energy Affairs, and the president and CEO of QatarEnergy.
He noted that the new mega project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 4.7 million tonnes annually.
Aside from this project, QatarEnergy’s solar portfolio includes the existing Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, as well as two others being built in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities.
With the addition of the new Dukhan Solar Power Plant, QatarEnergy’s portfolio of solar power projects in Qatar will reach a capacity of about 4,000 megawatts by the year 2030. This represents approximately 30% of Qatar’s total electrical power production capacity.
