India pushes for domestic wind turbine industry
The proposal requires companies to focus on local sources.
India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a draft amendment to include wind turbines in the Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM).
According to JMK Research & Analytics, the proposal, similar to the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers in the solar sector, aims “to strengthen the domestic wind turbine manufacturing ecosystem by introducing non-tariff barriers that limit imports.”
India aims to add approximately 70 gigawatts (GW) to 90 GW of new wind power capacity, indicating significant domestic demand for manufacturers.
“The amendments seek to enhance the protection of India’s wind sector from potential cybersecurity threats,” JMK said.
The amendments require Indian wind turbine manufacturers in future projects to realign their component supply chains to focus on domestic sources. Specifically, at least 64% of wind turbine components (by cost) must be sourced domestically.
Despite possible challenges in the near term, the changes are expected to promote a comprehensive development of India’s entire wind turbine manufacturing ecosystem in the long run.
